Meet the MINI Countryman

The fourth model to the MINI family, the Countryman is the first one with four doors and a rear hatch and the biggest MINI out there, with a passenger capacity of up to 5 people. The concept was unveiled at the 2008 Paris Auto Show and it was only two years later at the 2010 Geneva Auto Show in March that the production Countryman was introduced to the general public.

The MINI Countryman is a genuine crossover, incorporating features of a traditional SUV and a hatchback combined. It offers a marriage of the excellent handling the MINI brand is known for with the extra space and flexibility that other target groups need. The MINI Countryman offers not just additional space, but also optimized driving comfort and the go-kart feeling typical of the previous models. With an optional ALL4 all-wheel-drive, the MINI Countryman epitomizes premium quality, technology and design that MINI fans have loved through the years.

Great Visual Impact

It’s safe to say that the MINI Countryman is a beautiful car, just as good-looking as its predecessors, if not more. It blends the design of the classic MINI with the traditional crossover. It looks pretty much like a MINI Cooper, but a little bit longer and taller. It has large headlights and chrome details, as well as a larger MINI badge at the back. As far as the MINI Countryman’s exterior goes, it’s a huge success.

Effortlessly Balanced Interior

It might be a MINI, but it’s got great space. It’s got five extra inches over the standard MINI Cooper hatch and with that you get 12.2 cubic feet of cargo capacity. It’s also equipped with an innovative Center Rail, which gives you storage and other comfort features.

Versatile Engine Options

The MINI Countryman comes in a 1.6-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine which can make up to 120 horsepower and 118 pound-feet of torque in the Cooper that offers fuel efficiency and performance, along with fully variable valve timing and lift because of the VALVETRONIC technology. The Cooper S has the twin-scroll turbocharger, direct fuel injection and fully-variable valve management and can make up to 180 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque giving the best balance of power and fuel efficiency. A six-speed manual gearbox comes standard, but a six-speed automatic transmission with manual control is also available.

ALL4 All-Wheel Drive

The MINI Countryman offers a permanent all-wheel-drive system called ALL4, which utilizes an electro-hydraulic differential, placed directly on the transmission’s final drive to distribute the power from front to rear in an infinitely-variable process offering more traction to the already great handling of the MINI. It also includes features such as front axle with MacPherson spring struts and forged lower control arms, multi-link rear axle and Electronic Power Steering (EPS).

Great Safety Features

The MINI Countryman has not been tested by US institutions, but the EURO NCAP gave it five stars. It has frontal and side airbags and side curtain airbags for front and rear occupants for a total of six. It’s also equipped with three-point inertia-reel seat belts, belt latch tensioners and belt force limiters, as well as LATCH child seat fastenings. The MINI Countryman also has a Tire Pressure Monitor, Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) and an electronic limited-slip function for the front axle differential.

True Customization

The MINI Countryman comes in a wide range of customization options on both the exterior and the interior and even more options are available specific to this model. You can choose from a good number of interior colors, trim strips and upholstery as well. Its standard features include a multi-function steering wheel with cruise control, the MINI Center Rail, a premium six-speaker audio system with a CD player and AUX IN. A high end audio and navigation system, a mobile telephone interface, dual-pane Panoramic sunroof, adaptive headlights, Xenon headlight units, lightweight alloy wheels from 17 to 18 inches, sports suspension and John Cooper Works Performance Components are also available.
